Don't look at his face. Don't look at his face, Annabelle Bartlett mentally repeated over and over. To serve as her father's representative, she could not antagonize Grant Palmer.

Don't look at his face! she reminded herself one last time as the maid knocked on a door and a deep, pleasing voice said, "Come in."

Beauty's face blanched as she entered the office and saw a tall stranger standing at her father's desk. Her eyes focused on the thick, blond hair curling around his ears, his deep blue eyes, and the broad shoulders that tapered to a slender waist. She did not look at his face. I'm Annabelle Bartlett," she said, praying that the emotional strain she experienced wasn't evident on her face.

"Sit down, Miss Bartlett," he said in his pleasant voice. "How is your father's health?"

"His speech has returned to normal, and he's slowly regaining use of the left side of his body."

"He's had many problems during the past few years. No wonder he had a stroke."

"Yes," she answered, unwilling to discuss her father's downfall.

"Am I to understand that you came here of your own free will to finish the work your father started?" His blue eyes searched her face intently.

"That's right. I appreciate the opportunity you've given Father to settle his debts. After he became ill and could no longer fulfill his commitment to you, he said you were willing for one of his children to work in his place. My brothers have taken jobs in other parts of the country, and my two sisters are ill-suited for this work, so I came."
